건축설계와 오브제 디자인, 그리고 도시계획 등은 모두 '스케일의 차이'에 기반을 둔 독자적 분야로서 각기 세분화된 이론들을 바탕으로 발전해 왔다. 반면 이러한 스케일의 장애에 구애 받지 않고 자유롭게 넘나들며 총체적으로 인식하거나 그 이론적 간극을 메울 통합적 이론을 만들고자 하였던 사례들은 역사 속에서 발견된다. 예를 들어 모든 영역의 예술을 통합하려 했던 Gesamtkunstwerk의 건축가들의 경우가 그러하다. 뿐만 아니라, 응용예술에 반대했던 르 코르뷔지에의 경우도 이는 마찬가지인데, 1923년 건축에 관한 책인 Vers une architecture를 출판한 이후 2년 뒤, 그는 오브제에 관한 책 L’Art Decoratif d’Aujoud’hui 과 도시에 관한 책 Urbanisme 을 동시에 출판한 것이 상징적이다.

근본적으로 건축가는 건축에 집중한다. 그러나 어느 순간 건축가의 사고는 공간 내부의 오브제의 영역으로 축소(micro)되거나, 공간 외부의 도시적 영역으로 확장(macro)되곤 하는 것도 사실이다. 궁극적으로 작은 오브제와 거대한 도시는 중간 규모의 건축을 매개체로 만나게 되며, 결국 오브제와 도시의 갈등은 건축으로 매듭된다. 이러한 유토피아적 전제 아래, 건축-오브제-도시 이론 연구실은 이론 연구의 영역을 건축 뿐 아니라 오브제 디자인 및 도시계획까지 넓히며, 스케일의 한계를 넘어 삶에 관련된 모든 인위적 환경의 창조, 그와 관련된 구성, 구축, 변형 등의 통합적 이론 연구에 관심을 두고자 한다.

Architecture, Design and Urban Planning Object was autonomous creative domains, based on the difference of scale. But we can also find certain avant-gardists, who liberated this obstacle. For example, many architects of Art nouveau wanted to unify these domains of Small, Midium, Large, by trying to create a theory of Gesamtkunstwerk. Regarding Le Corbusier who opposes the Applied Art movement, like Adolf Loos: after Vers Une Architecture, his famous book for architecture in 1923, Le Corbusier published significantly two books in 1925, L’Art Decoratif d’Aujoud’hui about the question of Object design and Urbanisme about that of City planning.

An architect focuses on architecture. But it is also naturel that he became interested in the inside the space he creates (objects) and in the outside (urban environment). It is fundamentally architecture that can make relation between objects and city, and resolve their eventual crisis.

This utopian hypothesis allows our laboratory to expand research territory, from architecture to object and urbanism. AOU theory laboratory is aiming for the research theory about all artificial environment related to life and beyond scale, including question of composition, construction and process of transformation.
