한양대학교 공과대학 건축학부 동아시아 건축역사 연구실은 2002년 한동수교수의 본교 부임과 더불어 시작되었다. 연구실의 주된 연구목표는 한중일을 중심으로 한 동아시아 삼국의 고대 건축 및 도시에 관한 이론과 역사적 흐름을 분석하고 상호관계를 규명하는 것이다.

이를 위하여 본 연구실에서는 전통건축을 비롯한 근대건축의 실측조사, 현장 답사, 국내외 저명 대학과의 학술교류, 학술세미나 및 전시회의 개최, 정부 및 민간기관의 연구 프로젝트 참여 등과 같은 다양한 방식의 연구활동을 지속적으로 수행해 오고 있다. 또한 국내 최대의 한중일 건축역사관련 자료실을 운영하여 국내외 관련 연구자들에게 무료로 개방하고 있다.

대표적인 연구성과로는 한중일 고전건축의 실측방법론, 실측조사보고서, 도면, 대목장 등을 주제로 한 국제학술세미나 및 전시회의 개최를 비롯하여 풍수지리에 관한 정기 세미나 개최, 문화재청 및 지자체 발주 문화재 실측조사보고서의 간행, 한옥현대화 사업 및 전통건축기술실용화 사업 등과 같은 중요한 국책 연구프로젝트의 수행 등을 들 수 있다. 이외에도 최근에는 고대부터 근대에 이르기까지 한국건축역사와 관련된 광범위한 조사자료의 체계화 작업을 진행하고 있다.

Far East Asia Architecture History Laboratory (hereafter called FAHL), School of Architecture, Engineering College at Hanyang University has begun from 2002. A major objective of study in FAHL is to investigate a theory, a historic flow, and mutual relations among the East Asian countries such as Korea, China, and Japan on the subject of architectural and urban history.

FAHL has continuously performed research activities in many ways; research investigations of traditional and modern architecture, field surveys, academic exchanges with nationally and internationally renowned universities, academic symposiums, exhibitions, and project participation led by Korean government and private organizations. Also, FAHL has been managing the biggest library of architectural history in Korea, China, and Japan, and always open to researchers with no pay.

Representative research achievements of FAHL include important national projects; international symposiums and exhibitions regarding survey methodologies of traditional architectures in Korea, China and Japan, research and investigation reports, drawings, periodical conferences about Fengshui(geomancy), publications of research and investigation reports related to cultural properties ordered by Cultural Heritage Administration and local governments, modernization projects of Korean traditional house, project performances of traditional architecture technology, etc.

Lately, FAHL is progressing a systematization work with broadly based research data concerning the history of Korean architecture from ancient to modern times.
